Chakraborty is a kathak dancer,teacher,choreographer and cultural enthusiast
living in San Diego. Debjani
and performed with her extended family of accomplished artists since childhood.
In Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), under several renowned gurus, Debjani
studied classical dance Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Manipuri as well as folk dance
styles. She obtained her Bachelors as well as
Masters Degree, specializing in Kathak dance
from famed Rabindra-Bharati University, Kolkata. Debjani has won several
accolades in India. She has been performing Kathak for more than 20 years. Debjani
Chakraborty moved to USA in 1999 along with her husband and son. Her artistic
works have been presented in all over India, as well as in various locations across
the United States including North American Bengali Conference, Baltimore,
Minnesota Dance Festival - Minneapolis, Indian Association of Houston’s golden
jubilee celebrations - Houston, Minnesota State Capitol’s centenary
celebrations at St Paul, MN,
Francisco Bay Area and many prominent venues in San Diego. In addition to performing, teaching
dance has always been very close to Debjani’s heart.
has been a dance instructor in student’s cultural enrichment programs, in Santa
Clara Unified school district. For several years, Debjani has been teaching
Kathak for kids as well as adult students at various locations in San Diego. Debjani had the privilege to promote and teach Kathak Dance
at University of California San Diego.
She feels biggest advantage of Kathak dance is
its universal appeal and that’s why she hopes to take Indian dance to a new era
of understanding, exchange, and excellence.
loves to partake in various community programs and events that enhance the
multi-cultural fabric of this nation. She has been actively involved in
Federation of Indian Associations & Indo-American society of San Diego as
well as Rotary International, San Diego. Also, whenever opportunity presents
itself, Debjani volunteers in schools. Doing
yoga, listening to music and spending time with family and friends keeps her
happy. Through ICVC, Debjani is looking forward to explore and expand the
